Organised by DR Steve Presence of CMIR, the inaugural conference of the Radical Film Network (RFN) occurred in Birmingham on 7th and 8th Fenruary
Taking place over two days of February 2015, the conference was an opportunity for all those involved in radical film culture around the world – from activists and academics to filmmakers and festivals – to share and discuss their work and explore how the RFN can support it into the future. September: A Journey through Radicalism at Encounters 2014: As part of its 20th anniversary celebrations, Encounters Short Film and Animation Festival has invited the Centre for Moving Image Research to co-curate a season of films exploring the theme of radicalism in association with the Bristol Radical Film Festival and the Radical Film Network.
June 2014 Cinematographer Ben Smithard was in conversation at the Bargehouse in London with supporting clips with Prof Terry Flaxton of UWE’s Centre for Moving Image Research about his latest film Belle (2013) and other films: Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa (2013), My Week with Marilyn ( 2011), The Damned United (2009) and next years release of the Best Marigold Hotel 2 (2015). He has also worked on commercials and television (The Trip 2010) and will in this discussion outline his creative influences and speak about how he established a career in the British film industry. This talk was part of a FREE series of events held during the London degree show for The University of the West of England, Bristol of its Filmmaking and Creative Media, Photography, Animation courses at the Bargehouse, South Bank, London SE1 9PH 19th – 22nd June 2014.

July 2013: ISEA 2013, Sydney Australia, Professor Flaxton chaired a panel on Imaging Capabilities of the Future, taking part were Scott McQuire: School of Culture and Communication, University of Melbourne, Australia and Leon Gurevitch: School of Design, Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. Flaxton also presented a paper on The Future of the Moving Image
